A member received an email from someone calling themselves elizabeth.belXXXXXXXXXXXXXX claiming to be from South Africa and looking for 5 months accommodation in Australia. From the tone and content of the email, they were fairly certain this share accommodation enquiry was an attempted scam. WARNING!!! If you receive any offers or enquiries that you are not comfortable with or they send you a cheque for more than the agreed amount or you feel they are too good to be true - There is a high possiblility they are scammers! Do not send any money back to them, report them immediately! Please discuss it with someone first. You may contact our housemates admin anytime or the Residential Tenancies Association or union in your state. DON'T ANSWER ANY EMAIL THAT DOES NOT SEEM RIGHT. Report it to the ACCC.

These are scammers for sure. They usually start with a standard, friendly email stating that they are coming to your city soon and they ask a bit about the room and it's availability. If you reply, then their 2nd email will tell you their company's boss is paying for their trip. They will ask how much you require for the full term of their stay. Next they will say they are sending the full amount to your bank. But eventually they will say the boss made a mistake and sent the whole of their vacation money, including airfares. They simply need you to send most of it back. (and soon, so they can buy the tickets) If you are silly enough to have given your details, maybe you will get a cheque eventally, if they think they have won your confidence. But the cheque will be stolen or a forgery, and even if your bank were to clear it at first, you will have to pay it back. Most of the time a cheque is never sent. They just rely on the good nature and gullability of people who will refund money they didn't receive yet. Mind you, I have accepted many students, tourists and interns from overseas that need accommodation, with no dramas. They sent deposits by way of cheques from world known banks, or through Xoom. But it is a risk they are taking. (Maybe I am the scammer)

I also nearly got scammed by a Andrea from SouthAfrica. Similar to Morpheuesx above. I received a fake bank cheque for several times the rent amount as deposit. But luckily I was alerted by another post on the internet!
Best to ask very specific questions to someone who you suspect is fake. If they cant provide clear responses or give vague answers - they are fake.

SCAMwatch is a website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). SCAMwatch provides information to consumers and small businesses about how to recognise, avoid and report scams. Scams that are reported to SCAMwatch will be analysed by the ACCC.
Many scams originate overseas or take place over the internet, making them very difficult to track down and prosecute. If you lose money to a scam, it is unlikely that you will be able to recover your loss. The ACCC publishes this website to help consumers recognise and prevent scams.
The ACCC's roles extend beyond preventing scams and include other areas of consumer protection, infrastructure regulation, cartels and other forms of anti-competitive conduct. See the link below for more information on the ACCC.
The ACCC also works with state and territory fair trading agencies and other government agencies to promote awareness in the community about scams. In 2005 the ACCC and these other agencies formed the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce (ACFT) to coordinate this work. Cheers and thanks for all your comments!

After doing some research Berkan, yes she seems to be a scammer. It would be better not to go further with her and find some one else. If you are not sure about some one, let me know and I will conduct some research. Cheers!
